City and island walking tours in Greece

Guide to walking tours in Greece, with city and Greek island strolls all around the country

Whether you’re looking for an organised walking tour for your holidays in Greece or a rough guide you can follow at your own pace, we’ve got you covered with city and island strolls and walking tours in Greece.

You choose the destination and we’ll do the rest

There’s no better way to get to know a new place than by putting on a pair of comfortable shoes and hitting the streets. So allow us to share some of the best walking tours in Greece. As well as ticking off the highlights, we take you to hidden corners known only by locals, as well as giving you practical information on how to get around and when to go.

You’ll get just enough historical background, with insights into the cultural landmarks (such as museums & galleries) and local architecture, and point out the culinary highlights and much more. (See our culinary experiences if food is your focus.)

Exploring Athens, one step at a time

Of course you’ll be visiting the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum when you’re in Athens. But what about all those neighbourhoods around it, giving life and colour to the city – ancient, modern, traditional and hip all in one. Well, we’ve got walking tours that reveal all of Athens’ major landmarks in one stroll as well as walks that plug you into the pulse of the city, taking you into neighbourhoods new to the tourist map. We’ll also tell you where to find the best street art in Athens and show you the unexpected green spaces, with relaxing parks for picnics and hills with the best views of the city.

Walking tours in Thessaloniki and mainland Greece

We give you an open-sights tour of Thessaloniki (with all the cultural influences on display in Greece’s second city) and take you around a couple of the Peloponnese’s most vibrant towns, Nafplio and Kalamata, both easily reached by car from Athens. And if you think you know Greece, check out our walking tour of Kavala, a northeastern destination that mixes cultural influences in an intriguing way.

Walking tours on Greek islands

Strolling down island alleyways is one of the great summer treats on holiday in Greece. So we’ve gone around your favourite Greek islands and explored the main towns (usually known simply as Hora) and put together walking tours you can easily follow.

On Rhodes, you’ll be transported to a medieval world of chivalry and knights and on Corfu, you’ll find an old town influenced by the Byzantines, Venetians, French and British (all with an unmistakably Greek air). In fact, the entire old towns of both islands have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Picture-perfect island towns

Just imagine yourself exploring the labyrinth of whitewashed alleyways on a Cyclades island: sugar-cube houses, domed churches, cobblestones, pots of pink and purple bougainvillea … and, as is so often the case, a Venetian castle perched right at the top of town with views to neighbouring islands. Well, we take you around Syros’ cosmopolitan Ermoupoli and picture-perfect Ano Syros as well as the main towns of Mykonos, Ios, Naxos, Serifos and Sifnos.

In Paros, we explore the village of Naoussa. And Folegandros may be in the Dodecanese island chain, not the Cyclades, but you’d never know it from the aura and architecture of its main town.

Meanwhile, the history and charm of Rethymno’s Old Town and Agios Nikolaos live long in the memory in Crete, and we have walking tours in the main towns of Skiathos and Skyros and around Antiparos, the exotic little brother of Paxos in the Ionian Sea.

And whoever said it only needs to be on foot? If you want an island to explore by bike, Kos has your name on it, whether you’re in the old town or heading to the beach. All that and more.

So which walking tour in Greece tempted you?
